This placement persisted until recently, when a molecular analysis of Myrmicini by Jansen & Savolainen () showed that the monophyly of the tribe was dubious, and that Eutetramorium formed a clade with : Insecta.

Tetramorium atratulum is a rare workerless socially parasitic ant from the Palaearctic region, which has even been introduced together with its host in North America.
